My Favourite Poems on National Poetry Day

I’ve always loved reading poetry since I was a child – rhyming books, then verse and then the more intense blank verse too. I do have more of an inclination towards rhyming poetry though. As I grew older I took to writing poetry myself and most of my poems reflect the mood I am in. Needless to say I write best when I am sad or very angry. Since today is National Poetry Day, I thought I would ahre a few verses from each of my favourite poems that I have written. If you enjoy reading them, click on the …

Reviewing one of my favourite poems – The Owl and the Pussycat

I have always liked poetry. I write quite a few poems myself and I am most happy to see that my daughter at 10, is already showing signs of writing some pretty good verse. 🙂 One poem that has always amused me and that I like is The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear. I can see that I am not alone in this as it was voted the the most popular childhood poem. It is a ‘nonsense poem’ meaning that it does not make complete sense and indeed it does not have to because it is entertaining and …

A World Book Day Poem

Today is World Book Day in the UK and anyone who knows me will know how much I love books and reading. I thought I would put my reading to test and write a poem that perhaps relates life to reading. Fairy tales are for fairies Reality’s a different tale. You can huff and puff with all your might- But never make a sale. The Prince Charming you’ve always dreamed of? The big bad wolf may be; And that little pig with the house of straw? Might be you in the end, you see. You’ll never be given those magic …

How I Feel About Being a Mum

Do you often wonder what it would be like not being a Mum? I often wonder how different my life would be.  But at the end of it – I always realise one thing…. Read my poem below to find out. 🙂 I love being a Mum. Don’t get me wrong – But sometimes, just sometimes These thoughts come along… What if I wasn’t, how would it be? To live a life – carefree No midnight waking, No bathroom calls, No school runs, no lunch box No uniforms or falls. No after-school clubs, No weekend dance, I could jet off …

Who’s afraid of the Bogeyman?

Its almost Halloween – witches, spiders, monsters, the Bogeyman – things most people fear – but have you ever considered this? Who’s afraid of the Bogeyman? You and I and us. He stalks his prey by day or night And leaves behind a fuss. He’s the man in the park, The stranger next door, The shadow that hides by day. The lady that has that strange look in her eye, The person you meet on your way. You see him in every harsh word, You see him through your tears, He’s there in every cruel act, He’s there in all …

To my little boy – as he starts school

My darling boy, as you start school I’ll tell you what’s NOT considered ‘cool’ – To fight, to kick, to hit and punch When you’re out at play after lunch. Don’t be a telltale, don’t be shy Make sure you can look folks in the eye. Do your best and do me proud, So I can shout out very loud: “Look over there, that’s my son Not the one fighting, the other one He does his best in work and play And everyday he makes my day.” Others may call people names that are rude Don’t try to join them …

What’s it like in Heaven, Mum?

What’s it like in Heaven, Mum? Tell me, I’d sure like to know; Is it pretty and peaceful and calming? Among clouds white as snow? Are there seraphims, angels and cherubs All living side by side? Is there happiness, love and laughter? With nothing at all to hide? It’s not like down here, is it Mum? Where people are always mean They hurt and kill each other And love is seldom seen. Earths changed so much since you left,Mum The skies are mostly grey And I miss you every day, Mum. Why did you go away? I’m scared that I …
