About 10 days back I travelled to Croydon to review Khyber, a gourmet Indian restaurant on the High Street.
While we often cook Indian food at home, it is nice to go out for an Indian meal. The restaurant was welcoming and the ambience was great.
We started off with having some Papadums with various dips/chutneys and the children really enjoyed them.
We ordered fruit juices for drinks and I also had a lassi (yogurt drink) which was very refreshing.
For starters, Hubs and I had Trio of Chicken (£ 4.95) and this was quite delicious with the chicken soft and succulent. I liked the ginger tikka the best.
The children shared Paneer Shaslik (£ 4.50) as they quite like Paneer. The serving was quite easily shared among them and it was tasty.
My aunt, ordered the Onion Bhajee (£3.50) and this really was quite mouth watering. It was cooked perfectly without being too steeped in oil.
For mains – the children had Shahi Rezala Chicken (£7.50) – a mild curry in a pistachio and yogurt sauce, with Peshwari Nan (£2.95) – a sweet nan bread. One serving was more than enough for them as the quantity was good. They quite enjoyed it.
I had Hyderabadi Goat Biryani (£12.95) and this was delicious. Perfectly cooked rice and meat served with Dal Makhani. It was quite a large serving and too much for me so two people can quite easily share it.
Hubs had Bhuna Ghost Kaliyan (£9.95) which was slow cooked meat in lovely gravy. He had it with Lachha Paratha. (£2.95) The meat was tender and the gravy deliciously spicy.
My aunt had the classic Chicken Tikka Masala (£7.50) and she found it quite tasty.
We enjoyed the meal and the staff was on hand to ask if we required anything. It would be nice if they could cater to incorporating some items for children so that the restaurant gets more family visitors too.
We were so stuffed that we did not order dessert although there is a dessert menu.
The prices are reasonable and the quantity enough for people to share. All the dishes were well prepared. They were also well presented which I think is so important to defining a good meal.
We did enjoy the meal and I have to say that it is one of the better Indian restaurants I have been too.
