Covid-19: A Poem

We prayed for this to have an end,
A cure that would be round the bend
To save a sister and a friend
But no one seemed to listen.
We hoped that people would be wise,
And wear a mask or stay inside,
That we’d not see the cases rise,
But no one ever listened
We saw the cases rise each day,
More deaths more losses came our way,
It seemed that it was here to stay,
And no one cared to listen.
We heard the children – heard their cries
Silent suffering, dying eyes;
Yet, we fed them with daily lies
And poor souls – how they listened!
We told them it would all be right.
We’d win the war, we’d fight the fight.
That just beyond – there would be light.
The children – how they listened.
And then the days – they grew so bleak.
We hoped, we prayed – a cure we’d seek,
The days – they passed into each week
And still nobody listened.
Amid the plague, they ventured out
It’s just themselves they cared about
Unmasked, the rules they strove to flout
And never ever listened.
Today we see no end in sight,
No one cares for what is right,
Everyone ignores the plight,
And they refuse to listen.
The call of death is all but near,
The knocking that we greatly fear,
For us and for our loved ones dear –
Shouldn’t we start to listen?
We’ll only win if we all start
To play our role, to do our part.
It’s simple to just keep apart
It’s time to stop…and listen.
